296 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has been advised as to when the Drogheda sewerage treatment plant will become operational; if it will include the treatment of sewerage from outside the Borough of Drogheda; if he will provide financial support for its operation; if so the amount to be provided; the way in which the cost will be met in total; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Drogheda sewage treatment plant was commissioned on 22 January 2001. The treatment plant has been designed to cater for a population equivalent of 67,000 and will serve the Borough of Drogheda and the areas of Laytown, Bettystown, Mornington and Julianstown in east Meath.

Drogheda Corporation is currently examining tenders for the operation of the plant. The associated costs will not be determined until the tender process has been completed. As outlined in the water pricing framework, the Government is committed to funding the operational cost of domestic water services will be fully supported for by the local Government fund. Non-domestic operational costs must be fully recovered from non-domestic users.
