Vol. 539 No. 1

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Michael Bell

Question:

295 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the stage at which asylum seekers are entitled to make application for local authority housing; and the stage at which they will be considered as valid applicants if ever; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18504/01]

Persons who entered the State as asylum seekers and have been granted refugee status are entitled to apply for, and to be considered for, local authority housing.

In May 2000 my Department advised local authorities that they should also accept and consider applications for local authority housing from persons who have been given permission by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform to remain in the State.

Asylum seekers who have not been granted refugee status and who have not been given permission to remain in the State are not eligible to be considered for local authority housing.
