Question:

336 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the names of consultancy companies commissioned by his Department to carry out consultancy work since July 1997; the amounts paid to each company; and the schemes, programmes or projects for which consultancy advice was sought. [19101/01]

As part of the ongoing work in my Department, a wide range of reviews and studies are carried out by staff of the Department as part of their normal work. These tasks generally do not involve additional costs.

From time to time external consultants may be commissioned to carry out specific assignments in relation to policy issues or to aspects of the administration of the Department's schemes and services. These consultancies are arranged at official level under standard procurement procedures.

Details of the names (in alphabetical order), the amounts paid and the nature of the work or study involved in each case in respect of consultancy companies employed by my Department since June 1997 are as follows:
