Vol. 539 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Facilities.

John McGuinness

Question:

183 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress made in the provision of a gym at the Christian Brothers' School, James Street, Kilkenny; if the funding is approved; and, if so, when construction will commence. [19250/01]

My Department has agreed, in principle, to the provision of a PE hall at the school to which the Deputy refers. The unique nature of this very confined site determined that the standard template originally proposed for this school was inappropriate. A consultant architect has been commissioned to explore alternative solutions for the proposed project. A report is awaited.

Question:

184 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has agreed the details for the design of the gym to be provided at Loreto School, Granges Road, Kilkenny; the current stage of the proposed plans for the gym within his Department; and when construction will commence. [19251/01]

The school to which the Deputy refers is one of the schools comprising my Department's pilot scheme for the provision of template-designed, stand-alone physical education, PE, halls. The school will be provided with a PE hall of 806Mf7>2 in area.

Architectural planning of the template design is at an advanced stage and it is anticipated that the project can proceed to construction early next year.
