Vol. 539 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Waiting Lists.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

137 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children when a person (details supplied) in County Tipperary will be given a routine ear, nose and throat consultant's appointment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19421/01]

The Deputy will appreciate that the scheduling of hospital appointments is solely a matter for the relevant hospital concerned based upon clinical priority. I have, therefore, asked the chief executive officer at the South-Eastern Health Board, which has responsibility for the provision of hospital services in the case to which the Deputy is referring, to look into the matter and reply directly to the Deputy as a matter of urgency.

Question:

138 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children the waiting period for public patients on the routine ear, nose and throat consultants' waiting list at Waterford Regional Hospital; the waiting period for private patients on the consultants' waiting list at Waterford Regional Hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19422/01]

The waiting list information requested by the Deputy, in the format collected by my Department, for the March 2001 quarter is as follows:

Waterford Regional Hospital

Specialty

Children 3-6 mths

Children 6 mths and over

Adults 3-12 mths

Adults 12 mths and over

Total

ENT

16

31

48

45

140

Private waiting list data are not routinely collected by my Department. Overall hospital waiting list figures have gone down by 23% since March 2000. It is my intention to pursue continual reductions in waiting lists and waiting times for hospital treatment in 2001. Dedicated funding for waiting list procedures of £34.5 million was allocated in 2000 to health agencies to enable hospitals to carry out waiting list procedures and I am pleased to inform the Deputy that £34.5 million has been indicated to health agencies under the waiting list initiative for 2001.
