Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

Bernard Allen

Question:

620 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has been consulted on the proposed Council of Europe directive that would open up training posts to third country nationals and ensure better recognition of qualifications. [22122/01]

I assume that the Deputy is referring to European Directive 2001/19. This directive amends earlier EC directives dealing with the free movement of doctors and the recognition of professional qualifications as well as training undergone and-or professional experience gained in a member state. I am sure the Deputy is aware that, under earlier EU directives dealing with this area, training posts have been available to non EU doctors for many years. Many of the doctors concerned have in the past worked or currently work within the Irish hospital service.
