Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Bernard Allen

Question:

850 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of speed cameras in fixed locations countrywide; and the cameras which are working on a 24 hour basis. [21041/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are currently four fixed speed cameras in use by the Garda Síochána and that these are moved between 20 sites in the Louth-Meath Garda division and in north County Dublin. I understand that unless these cameras are being repaired or are in need of maintenance or calibration, they are in use on a 24 hour basis. The four cameras constitute part of a pilot programme in extending the use of fixed and mobile automatic speed detection devices, as per the commitment in the Government's national strategy on road safety, 1998-02.
