Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Black Diaries.

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin

Question:

170 Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin asked the Taoiseach the further steps which have been taken to establish a rigorous inquiry into the provenance and genuineness of the so-called Black Diaries attributed to Roger Casement, using modern forensic and analytical techniques; and the information which has been forthcoming from the British Government on this matter. [21824/01]

There are consultations going on between academic and other experts, including a media interest, which also involves the Governments and public authorities of Britain and Ireland, with a view to establishing an agreed programme of comparative tests, forensic and otherwise, on the "black diaries" and other writings of Roger Casement, the results of which, whatever they may be, would be capable of commanding a broad measure of public confidence, both on these islands and further afield.
