Vol. 541 No. 4

Written Answers. - Air Travel Levies.

John Dennehy

Question:

272 Mr. Dennehy asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider introducing a ministerial order suspending the collection of the tax levied on airline passengers for a period such as six months or as he deems appropriate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23168/01]

Ireland imposes no national travel tax either on air or sea passengers, so it is not possible to suspend any tax. For the Deputy's information, I abolished the £5 – 6.35 – travel tax in my budget of December 1999. The tax has not been payable since 1 January 2000. I have no responsibility for any charges made by other countries, or for any other charges levied by airlines, airport operators or municipal or other authorities which are sometimes described on tickets as taxes.
