Vol. 541 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Regulations.

Dick Spring

Question:

412 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason publication of the amended Garda Síochána regulations has been delayed. [22897/01]

Earlier this year I obtained the approval of the Government to abolish the height requirement for entry to the Garda Síochána, 5'9" for males and 5'5" for females. No Garda recruitment competition has been held since then. Regulations providing, inter alia, for the abolition of the height requirement have been drawn up in my Department and I intend to bring them to Government for approval in the very near future. I can assure the Deputy that the height requirement will not apply in any future Garda competition.
