428 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of on-the-spot fines regarding safety belt wearing for each of the past three years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23151/01]

Fines on-the-spot for seat belt offences were introduced by the Minister for the Environment and Local Government in February 1999. The details requested by the Deputy are set out in the following tabular statement:

The Garda national road safety initiative, Operation Lifesaver, continues to focus on speeding, drink driving, seat belt offences, dangerous and careless driving, which are the principal causes of road deaths in this State.
