The appeal results for the 2001 leaving certificate examination were issued by my Department on 4 October. In the processing of appeals the work of each candidate was fully re-marked question by question. A fundamental fea ture of the appeal process is that the re-marking is performed by a different examiner to the one who originally marked the work. This year's leaving certificate examination culminated in the issue of 390,000 grades. The number of grades appealed was 8,955. There were 2,413 upgrades and 15 grades were revised downwards.
