Vol. 542 No. 2

Written Answers. - Departmental Funding.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

380 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has received an application for funding (details supplied); if so, if he will recommend funding in this case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23949/01]

No application, as referred to in the question has been received by my Department.

Section 75 of the Roads Act, 1993, empowers road authorities to close public roads temporarily for events such as road races and to recover their costs from the organisers of such events. Use of roads for private purposes in these circumstances would be primarily under the management of those organising these events, and responsibility for implementing safety arrangements including the provision of public safety insurance cover and any physical modification of the public road environment, would also rest primarily with and be financed by these organisers. My Department has no role as regards individual road closures and there is no requirement to notify it of such events.
