Vol. 542 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

538 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the appointment of permanent teachers in Kilshanroe national school, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23939/01]

The staffing of a primary school is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous school year. The actual number of mainstream posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule and is finalised for a particular year following discussions with the education partners. The enrolment at the school in question has decreased from 55 pupils on 30 September 1999 to 51 pupils on 30 September 2000. This latter enrolment entitles the school to a staffing of a principal and two mainstream class teachers for the 2001-02 school year. I understand that one of the two mainstream class teachers in the school is on secondment at present. In accordance with standard procedure, the board of management has employed a temporary teacher for the duration of the secondment.
