Vol. 542 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rail Safety.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

94 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she has satisfied herself that the quality of rolling stock on both commuter and provincial rail services is adequate to meet international safety standards; if the rolling stock on the north Kildare commuter routes are of such standard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24564/01]

The responsibility for ensuring the safety of railway operations is a matter for Iarnród Éireann and is not one in which I have a function. As I stated in my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 126 of 26 June 2001, Iarnród Éireann has advised me that all new rolling stock is purchased to current internationally recognised safety standards and that older rolling stock was purchased to internationally recognised safety standards which pertained at the time of purchase.
