Vol. 542 No. 4

Written Answers. - Club Licence Renewal.

Willie Penrose

Question:

185 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 942 of 3 October 2001, the reason an application for the renewal of a club licence cannot be advertised in a local newspaper circulating in the relevant area; if he will consider amending the regulations in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24722/01]

As I indicated in my reply to the Deputy's earlier question, the requirement to publish a notice of application for the renewal of a club licence in a daily newspaper is a statutory requirement under the Registration of Clubs (Ireland) Act, 1904. Publication in a daily newspaper rather than a local one affords a wider level of exposure to such applications.

I am, of course, prepared to consider any other options which may emerge in this regard from the continuing deliberations of the Commission on Liquor Licensing. The Deputy may wish to make known his views on this matter to the commission.
