Vol. 542 No. 4

Written Answers. - Speeding Fines.

Michael Ring

Question:

186 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of speeding fines issued in total for 2000; the number of speeding fines issued from January 2001 to date; and the amount of revenue which has been created from these fines. [24723/01]

I am informed by Garda authorities that the information sought by the Deputy in relation to speeding fines in respect of the year 2000 and 2001 to date is as set out in the following tabular statement:

Year

Number of on-the-spot Speeding Fines

Amount Collected

2000

224,264

£13,696,192

2001 to date(16/10/01)

253,179

£11,173,000

I should state that, while the amount collected, as set out in the tabular statement, is principally moneys collected in respect of on the spot speeding fines, I have also been informed by Garda authorities that it is not possible to differentiate between money collected for fines on the spot for speeding and for other offences. Additional money would have been collected through the courts in respect of fines on the spot cases which were the subject of court proceedings.
The Deputy will appreciate that, in relation to the amount collected in respect of 2001 to date, fines imposed recently are still in the process of being collected. A true total for the amount collected for the year 2001 to date will not emerge until early next year.
