Vol. 542 No. 4

Written Answers. - Sexual Offences.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

189 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of rape cases reported; the number which went to court and in which convictions were secured in each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24793/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the statistics for the offence of rape, as published in the annual reports of An Garda Síochána for the years 1995 to 1999, the latest year for which figures are available, are as set out in the following table. I should point out that the number of proceedings commenced for 1999 is for the first nine months of the year only. In addition, the numbers of convictions shown from 1995 to 1999 reflect the position as of the date in the following year when the annual report for each year was published.
