Vol. 542 No. 4

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Report.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

37 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Defence if he will make a statement on the report of the Defence Forces for 2000. [24448/01]

The Defence Forces Annual Report for 2000 was published on 9 October 2001 as part of our policy to place on public record the continuing achievements of the Defence Forces.

The report describes the Defence Forces mission and roles, military capability, structures and deployment and records significant improvement in areas such as training, equipment and infrastructure, as the implementation of the White Paper on Defence proceeds.

The report also provides useful information on aid to the civil power operations in 2000, peace support activity, fishery protection, major emergency relief operations, and the provision of air services, including search and rescue.

The report serves as a very useful reminder of the important work done by our Defence Forces at home and abroad. As the House will be aware, this work is often done in difficult circumstances by the men and women of the Defence Forces in the service of the State.
