Vol. 542 No. 4

Written Answers. - Army Barracks.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

84 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Defence the status of the lands at the former Army barracks at Ballincollig, County Cork, including a summary of the costs involved to his Department since the closure; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24644/01]

As I previously indicated in my reply to a previous parliamentary question, a comprehensive integrated area action plan was commissioned from independent consultants to provide for the future development of Murphy Barracks, Ballincollig. That plan provides for a wide range of community, amenity, residential and commercial uses for the property. The development of the Murphy Barracks lands will be critical in the future overall development of the town of Ballincollig. My Department submitted the integrated plan to Cork County Council in April of last year for consideration in the context of a variation to the existing Cork county development plan. I understand the matter was on the agenda of a recent meeting of the council and no objection was raised to the adoption of the plan. A final decision on the matter is expected in the near future.

In addition, the costs incurred since the evacuation of the former Murphy Barracks are as follows :

(a)Integrated Area Action Plan £102,433 130,063 (b)Private Security, Electricity, Water

and Miscellaneous expenses£581,000 737,718 Significant savings have arisen since the evacuation of the five barracks placed under private security arrangements. On military security duty alone, it is estimated that savings to date amount to almost £1.022 million, 1.297,672, million. In addition, there have been significant savings on utility costs, such as telephone, gas and electricity charges at each of the evacuated barracks which, for example, would have amounted to approximately £165,000, 209,507, in the case of Murphy Barracks, Ballincollig.
