Vol. 542 No. 4

Written Answers. - Organic Farming.

Seamus Kirk

Question:

112 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he will consider making preparations for the establishment of an organic lamb marketing strategy in the Cooley Peninsula; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24678/01]

Late last year my Department, as recommended in the Agri-Food 2010 report, established an organic development committee to prepare a coherent strategy for the development of the organic sector in Ireland. At the first meeting of this committee, three sub-groups were established to examine specific issues relating to the organic sector. Marketing of organic produce in Ireland, along with issues relating to market intelligence, quality assurance, promotion and the development of a national label are being addressed by one of the sub-groups, which is expected to shortly submit its report and recommendations to the main organic development committee. I shall await the report and recommendations of the main organic development committee before considering any further strategies to develop organic farming in Ireland.
