Vol. 542 No. 5

Written Answers. - Health Research.

Seán Power

Question:

342 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Health and Children if any study has been carried out to assess the needs of people suffering from the long-term consequences of head and spinal injuries; if not, if he will consider carrying out a study; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25259/01]

I am not aware of any study that has been carried out to assess the needs of people suffering from the long-term consequences of head and spinal injuries. However, my Department, in conjunction with the Health Research Board, the health boards and the voluntary physical and sensory disability sector, is currently considering the recommendations of the report of the national physical and sensory database committee. The database will include the projected service requirements for each individual with a physical or sensory disability over a five year period. This will enable a planned and co-ordinated approach for each individual's service needs, including the needs of people with head and spinal injuries, to be implemented.
