Vol. 542 No. 5

Written Answers. - Registration of Title.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

356 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the present status of the proposal for the registration of the title architect; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25009/01]

The 1997 report of the strategic review committee on the construction industry recommended that the title of "Architect" be registered by law. The forum for the construction industry submitted detailed proposals for the registration of architects, following consultation and agreement with all the architectural representative bodies – Association of Building Engineers, Architects and Surveyors Institute, Group of Independent Architects of Ireland, Irish Architects Society, and the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland.

My Department is currently finalising the general scheme of the Building Control Bill, 2002. This will include provision for the registration of architects, broadly along the lines recommended by the strategic review committee and the forum for the construction industry. I intend to submit the relevant legislative proposals to Government for approval shortly.
