Vol. 542 No. 5

Written Answers. - Primary Education Needs.

Joe Higgins

Question:

470 Mr. Higgins (Dublin West) asked the Minister for Education and Science if he is undertaking a review of primary education needs in the Dublin 15 area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25156/01]

The planning section of my Department monitors area development plans and meets with the local authorities as required to establish the location, scale and pace of major housing developments in any given area. An assessment is carried out of the likely implications of such developments in relation to the capacity of existing schools and, where appropriate, the local authority is requested to reserve a site for educational purposes.

A number of sites for educational use have been reserved in the Dublin 15 area in response to an expected increase in demand for pupil places as a result of housing developments. My Department will continue to monitor developments in the area and will address any emerging needs.
