Question:

472 Mr. Higgins (Dublin West) asked the Minister for Education and Science the way in which the children who will live in the substantial new housing areas in the parish of Mulhuddart will be accommodated in schools in the area. [25158/01]

I proposed to take Questions Nos. 471 and 472 together.

The planning section of my Department monitors area development plans and meets with the local authorities as required to establish the location, scale and pace of major housing developments in any given area. An assessment is carried out of the likely implications of such developments in relation to the capacity of existing schools and, where appropriate, the local authority is requested to reserve a site for educational purposes.

A number of sites for educational use have been reserved in the Dublin 15 area in response to an expected increase in demand for pupil places as a result of housing developments. My Department will continue to monitor developments in the area and will address any emerging needs.
