Vol. 542 No. 5

Written Answers. - Radiation Levels.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

183 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the levels of radiation recorded in each county immediately after the Chernobyl disaster; if the readings constituted a hazard to the food chain or to public health; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24959/01]

The monitoring of radioactivity levels in the air and water and in individuals, animals, fauna, poultry, eggs, crops, fish seaweed or any food etc., is a statutory day to day function of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland and is not a matter in which I have a direct function. All the available information on radioactivity levels recorded after the Chernobyl accident, including information on a county by county basis, can be found in the various reports published by the institute between 1987 and 1992, including, in particular, the report, Chernobyl – its effects on Ireland published in 1987.
