Question:

200 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children the amount of expenditure on research into mental illness in each of the years 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001; and the projected expenditure in 2001 provided by his Department. [25495/01]

The Health Research Board has a mental health research division which is funded by my Department. The budget of this mental health research division over the past four years is as follows:

My Department has also provided funding of £300,000, 380,921, over the past two years to the National Suicide Research Foundation towards the establishment of a parasuicide register and a national parasuicide study. The National Suicide Review Group, which is also funded by my Department, has provided £88,000, 111,737 this year and £41,000, 52,059 in 2000 to various groups for specific initiatives in the area of suicide research.
