178 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of people who died in violent circumstances in 1998, 1999, 2000 and to date in 2001. [27051/01]

Statistics in relation to the number of persons who died in violent circumstances, defined as murder and manslaughter, for the years 1998 and 1999 are as shown in the following table. Statistics for the years 2000 and 2001 have not yet been published and are, therefore, provisional and subject to change. The number of people who died in violent circumstances in each of the years in question is as follows:
