Vol. 543 No. 4

Written Answers. - Heritage Properties.

Ivor Callely

Question:

142 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the level of work and upgrading agreed to be carried out on Illnacullin, Glengarriff; the improvement works to the slipway, the Martello tower, the footpaths and steps; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26558/01]

My Department has invested considerably in the maintenance and development of Ilnacullin, Glengarriff, County Cork, more commonly known as Garnish Island, over the years since the island was bequeathed to the State in 1953. I am pleased to acknowledge that it is one of the premier heritage properties managed by my Department. Plans are currently in hand for upgrading paths and steps in addition to the ongoing programme of maintenance of the plant collections and grounds. Further works including improvements to the slipway and the Martello tower, referred to by the Deputy, are also planned. It is intended to implement these works in 2002 subject of course to financial resources being available
