Vol. 543 No. 4

Written Answers. - Historical Properties.

Ivor Callely

Question:

143 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the material which is available on the Battle of Clontarf in 1014; the information and maps available to her Department; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26559/01]

No material or artefacts which can be associated with the battle are available, either in the National Museum of Ireland or elsewhere.

No contemporary maps of the Battle of Clontarf are extant and even the precise location of the battle remains to be determined. The actual details of the battle remain poorly understood in many respects. Accounts of the battle, from a historical perspective, have been published by Professor John Ryan in the Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, 1938, and by G.A. Hayes-McCoy in his book, Irish Battles, 1969. My Department is not in possession of any information additional to that presented in these accounts.
