Vol. 544 No. 3

Written Answers. - Accident and Emergency Services.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

341 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Health and Children the numbers of patients attending county hospitals as a result of assault in each of the years 1997 to date in 2001. [29031/01]

The information requested by the Deputy is not routinely collected by my Department. Information on the number of accident and emergency attendances is collected. However, it is not possible to determine the number of attendances due to assault. The hospital in-patient inquiry system provides detailed information for acute hospitals for each in-patient. The table below illustrates the number of in-patient hospitalisations in acute hospitals due to homicide and injury purposely inflicted by other persons for the years from 1997 to date.
