Vol. 544 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Michael Creed

Question:

477 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress which has been made regarding the proposed establishment of the national council for special education; the consultations which have taken place regarding its structural roles and functions; when he expects the council to commence its work; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28821/01]

The Government decided in June 2001 that work should proceed on the establishment of an examinations commission, a special education service, regional offices and the transfer of responsibilities relating to the institutes of technology to the Higher Education Authority.

My Department is engaged in consultations with trade unions and staff interests with a view to the implementation of these measures at an early date.
