Vol. 544 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

489 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 144 of 5 April 2001, he will outline the position regarding the provision being made for the needs of the person in question; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28877/01]

The pupil referred to by the Deputy commenced primary school in September, 2001.

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that, with effect from the commencement of the current school year, my Department has sanctioned full-time special needs assistant support for the child in question. The child is also in receipt of support from the visiting teacher service.

In addition, as agreed with the child's parents at the time of his enrolment, my Department's inspectorate has now reviewed the child's special educational needs. Arising from this review, arrangements are being made to provide resource teaching support for the child. My officials will be in contact with the school authorities shortly in relation to this matter.
