Vol. 544 No. 3

Written Answers. - Euro Changeover.

Michael Bell

Question:

156 Mr. Bell asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the retail trade is being charged a substantial fee for having their cash registers transferred to euros; her plans to grant aid this important matter; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [28545/01]

From the outset of the euro business awareness campaign organised by Forfás, it has been clearly suggested to all business representative associations and to individual business operations by way of published material that no direct financial assistance would be available to businesses in relation to the changeover to the euro. Notwithstanding this, any capital expenditure incurred by individual businesses in connection with the changeover would be allowable for taxation purposes in the normal way. Accordingly, it is not my intention to introduce any form of grant aid for this purpose as suggested by the Deputy.
