Vol. 544 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pharmacy Market Deregulation.

Pat Carey

Question:

157 Mr. P. Carey asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment her plans to deregulate the retail pharmacy market; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [28570/01]

Responsibility for the regulation of the pharmacy sector is a matter for the Minister for Health and Children who has recently commenced a review of the regulations governing pharmacy. The review group has publicly sought submissions in regard to issues relevant to the review.

The OECD report on regulatory reform in Ireland published last spring commented on the many positive aspects of Ireland's regulatory regime, but also highlighted areas where progress must be made in eliminating entry restrictions to sectors of economic activity including the pharmacy sector. The Government has set up structures to implement the OECD's recommendations.

I hope the review of the regulations governing pharmacy will lead to a satisfactory conclusion in facilitating the appropriate balance to be struck between public health and safety considerations and removing any unnecessary obstacles to competition.
