Vol. 545 No. 2

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with three different topics. I propose to deal with these topics separately and I will call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office. In regard to the first topic, I received notice from Deputy Naughten. I now call on him to state the matter.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of urgent importance, namely, in light of the discovery today of the death of a prisoner at Castlerea Place of Detention in County Roscommon, the urgent need for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to address the prevalence of suicide in Irish prisons.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be in accordance with Standing Order 31. In regard to the second topic, I have received notice from Deputy Jim Higgins. I now call on him to state the matter.

(Mayo): I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following matter requiring urgent consideration, namely, the loss of 250 jobs at Servis Air; the threat of further job losses at the company and the 2,026 jobs to be shed at Aer Lingus; and the major impact of the 11 September tragedy on the aviation, tourism and related sectors.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be in accordance with Standing Order 31. In regard to the third topic, I have received notice from Deputy Sargent. I call on him to state the matter.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to ensure action is taken to investigate the links between a major investor in security at Sellafield and the factory in the Sudan owned by this investor which was bombed by the United States of America after it was believed to be making chemical weapons for Osama bin Laden and that this matter be addressed urgently in view of the planned visit, I hope before Christmas, by the EU Commissioner for the Environment and Nuclear Safety. I am sure Members will join me in wishing her a speedy recovery from her illness.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be in accordance with Standing Order 31.
