71 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the level of support offered to Irish licensed airlines, airport operators and service providers in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in the United States of America; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [30069/01]
One of the repercussions of the United States terrorist attacks has been the decision of insurance underwriters to withdraw cover for war and terrorist risks from airlines, airports and other essential aviation suppliers. The Government, in common with the action by other EU member states, and governments worldwide, stepped in to bridge the gap in insurance cover, which was no longer available. I introduced a Bill to give effect to this in the House on 23 November.
In addition, the Transport Council, at its meeting on 16 October 2001, approved the payment by member states of aid to airlines whose operations were directly affected by the four day closure of US airspace. On 1 November last, a letter issued from my Department to all Irish licensed airlines setting out the criteria for such aid and inviting submissions from affected airlines. To date, two claims have been received and a further claim is expected.
