Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

98 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance if he will report on the position regarding remedial works involved in the alleviation of flooding at Hazelhatch, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30186/01]

The Shinkeen Stream (Hazelhatch) drainage scheme was confirmed by the Minister for Finance in early July 2001 and works commenced in mid July. The scheme works were carried out by Office of Public Works personnel and were substantially completed earlier this month. Only minor remedial works remain to be carried out such as spoil treatment and reseeding.

Question:

99 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance if the various reports sought arising from the flooding which occurred at Maynooth and other locations throughout north Kildare in November 2000 have been compiled; if conclusions have been reached regarding a resolution of the cause or causes; when it is expected the relevant remedial works accruing from such investigations will be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30187/01]

Reports from Kildare County Council were received by the Office of Public Works in October and November 2001 in relation to flooding at Maynooth and other locations in north Kildare. These reports are being examined but preliminary indications are that significant additional information is required before a decision can be taken as to whether viable flood prevention schemes can be devised. The Office of Public Works will meet with Kildare County Council in the near future to discuss matters.

Question:

100 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the progress which has taken place in the matter of addressing the issues which caused flooding at Mill Lane, Leixlip, County Kildare, in November 2000; the extent to which dialogue has taken place with other relevant statutory authorities in this regard; the extent to which agreement has been reached on the resolution of the issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30188/01]

The Commissioners of Public Works have been in contact with and requested details from Kildare County Council in relation to flooding in various locations in County Kildare in November 2000 including the Leixlip area as well as any other reports, historical data, etc., relating to flooding in general in the county. Kildare County Council has examined a number of flooding problems in the county and has commissioned reports for dealing with these in the short and medium term. Some of these reports have recently been received by the Office of Public Works but, to date, no report or detailed information has yet been received in relation to the flooding at Mill Lane, Leixlip. When the relevant information in relation to flooding at Mill Lane has been received, the commissioners will liaise with Kildare County Council with a view to determining how best to deal with the flooding problems identified.
