Vol. 545 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tax Rebates.

John Perry

Question:

109 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Finance if he will waive or reduce the interest for a person (details supplied) in County Sligo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30308/01]

The collection of tax and interest on late payment of tax is a matter placed under the care and management of the Revenue Commissioners.

I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that an interest charge of £574.37-729.30, has arisen in respect of the person referred to by the Deputy because of the late payment of income tax for the years 1996/97 and 1997/98. Both the tax liability, based on returns submitted by or on behalf of the person concerned, and interest due for those years was referred to the Revenue Sheriff for collection because of the person's failure to make payment despite being requested by Revenue to do so.
I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the tax has been paid but that the sum of £892-1,132.61, which includes the Sheriff's fees, is still outstanding. Neither Revenue, nor the Sheriff concerned have been provided with any information or evidence of the financial difficulties referred to by the Deputy. Details of any such difficulties, which should be supplied without delay, will be taken into account by the Sheriff in deciding on the person's ability to pay the charges involved.
