Vol. 545 No. 3

Written Answers. - Bail Referendum.

Question:

146 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the steps which have been taken to implement the bail referendum; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30337/01]

The Bail Act, 1997, which was passed into law by the Oireachtas in May 1997, gave effect to the terms of the Sixteenth Amendment of the Constitution which provided for the refusal of bail to a person charged with a serious offence where it is reasonably considered necessary to prevent the commission of a serious offence by that person. The Act was brought fully into operation on 15 May 2000.
