Vol. 545 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Escorts.

Tony Killeen

Question:

151 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason the Garda authorities have refused to provide a Garda escort for consignments of 1H Tetrazole to a company (details supplied) in County Clare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30343/01]

Question:

152 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will reclassify 1H Tetrazole in order that it can be transported here on the same terms as in the United Kingdom. [30344/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 151 and 152 together.

The product 1H Tetrazole is classified by the United Nations as an explosive. This classification is accepted both here and in the United Kingdom and as such must be imported, transported and stored in this State as an explosive material for safety reasons. It is not open to me, therefore, to reclassify this material as non-explosive. Security requirements for the transport of explosive material are a matter for the Garda authorities. I understand that the matter of providing an escort for the transporting of this material is the subject of correspondence between them and the company.
