Vol. 545 No. 3

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Paul Bradford

Question:

178 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education and Science if a person (details supplied) in County Cork will be awarded a third level grant to repeat his first year in college. [30392/01]

Under the terms of the maintenance grants scheme for students attending post-leaving certificate courses, 2001, grants may not be paid in respect of a second period of attendance at the same level for a course approved for the purposes of this scheme, irrespective of whether or not a grant was paid previously. The vocational education committee will have discretion to waive this provision in exceptional circumstances such as certified serious illness. I understand that additional medical evidence was recently supplied by the candidate in question to officials at County Cork VEC. The case will be considered in light of the additional medical evidence.
