Vol. 545 No. 5

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Alan Shatter

Question:

168 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the expenditure incurred to date in 2001 in the establishment of Garda closed circuit television systems identified by locations in which such closed circuit television is in use; and the expenditure allocated for Garda closed circuit television for 2002. [31040/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the expenditure incurred this year up to 31 October 2001 on Garda CCTV systems amounted to £33,283, 42,261. This expenditure was required for the cleaning of cable ducts for the Cork city CCTV system which amounted to £15,872, 20,153; the installation of equipment for the Dublin city CCTV system which amounted to £9,052, 11,494; and incidental items on which were spent £8,359, 10,614. The allocation in the Garda Vote for CCTV projects in 2002 is £3,911,043, 4,966,000.

As the Deputy may be aware, tenders for the installation of town centre CCTV systems in Bray, Dundalk, Dun Laoghaire, Finglas, Galway and Limerick have been received and are currently being evaluated by the telecommunications section of the Garda Síochána. In this regard I am advised by the Garda authorities that the evaluation process is expected to be completed this month.

Question:

169 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when he will make finance available for the provision of Garda closed circuit television cameras for Mullingar town, County Westmeath; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31041/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that an application for a Garda CCTV system in Mullingar has been received by the advisory committee established by the Garda Commissioner to evaluate applications. The application from Mullingar is currently under consideration together with applications from other cities and towns throughout the country. Co-funding is also a feature of Garda CCTV systems and this is usually addressed when it has been decided to install a Garda CCTV system in an area.
