Vol. 546 No. 1

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

John Browne

Question:

90 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Finance the position regarding his proposed plan to deal with the major flooding problems in the town of Enniscorthy, County Wexford; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31200/01]

I met a deputation from Wexford County Council in February 2001 to discuss matters arising from the serious flooding which occurred in various locations in County Wexford, including Enniscorthy, in November 2000. Arising from that meeting a steering group was set up comprising officials from Wexford County Council, Enniscorthy Urban District Council and the Office of Public Works to progress the investigation of the flooding problem in Enniscorthy. Owing to restrictions relating to foot and mouth disease, however, there was some unavoidable delay in progressing the matter immediately. In May 2001 the Office of Public Works forwarded to Wexford County Council, for circulation to the steering committee, a draft brief for the engagement of consultants for the proposed study of the Enniscorthy flooding problem. The steering committee met to consider the brief and is due to meet again on 11 December 2001 when it is hoped to finalise the brief. Following this, the tender competition for consultants must be advertised in the EU journal. The appointment of a consultant will be subject to the availability of funding at the relevant time.
