Vol. 546 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disabled Drivers.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

91 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Finance his views on the contention that parents of blind and visually impaired children should qualify for the disabled passengers tax concession scheme to help their children attend library and other activities. [31248/01]

The disabled drivers' and disabled passengers' (tax concessions) scheme is currently under review by an interdepartmental group which is chaired by an official from the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. The group is examining all aspects of the scheme including the qualifying medical criteria. I understand the work of the review group is at an advanced stage. I have been informed that there are up to 360,000 persons in Ireland who could be regarded as disabled to some degree or other. I do not consider it prudent to make any further comment at this time.
