Vol. 546 No. 4

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Representation.

Austin Deasy

Question:

58 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs it he will consider breaking off diplomatic relations with Israel in view of the continuing brutal suppression of the Palestinian people. [31996/01]

The Government believes it is important to maintain diplomatic contacts with both parties to the conflict in the Middle East and this is done through our embassy to Israel in Tel Aviv and our representation to the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah. This arrangement gives us a clear and balanced view of events and direct and immediate access to both parties. As I told the House on 16 October, if Ireland is to exercise influence in this situation, it is essential that we are accepted as an impartial and fair-minded partner by both sides.
