Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Bovine Diseases.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

286 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development his proposals to introduce the vaccination of bovines as part of the tuberculosis eradication scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1541/02]

Vaccination for tuberculosis is not allowed in EU member states and accordingly there are no proposals to introduce vaccination of bovines as part of the tuberculosis eradication scheme here. However, my Department is currently seeking the development of a vaccine for badgers which, if successful, could have a significant impact on the transmission of the disease from badgers to cattle.
