Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

873 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the progress made in the implementation of the proposals for the development of the Grand Canal corridor with particular regard to the area around the listed lock house at Clonburris in Clondalkin (details supplied). [1609/02]

The issue raised by the Deputy, in relation to the implementation of the proposals for the development of the Grand Canal corridor with particular regard to the area around the listed lock house at Clonburris in Clondalkin is the day to day responsibility of Waterways Ireland, a North/South implementation body for inland waterways, set up under the British-Irish Agreement signed in March 1999.

Waterways Ireland has informed me that it has implemented a number of proposals for the development of the Grand Canal corridor in the Clondalkin area. In particular, landing jetties have been installed at the ninth and twelfth locks and, as part of Waterways Ireland's NDP programme for 2002, they also propose to install landing jetties at the tenth and eleventh locks. Waterways Ireland had a recent meeting on site with a member of the Loc Canáil Foundation and they have agreed to work in co-operation with the local community in the development of the canal in this area. Waterways Ireland have no immediate plans for the restoration of the Omers lock house.
