Vol. 547 No. 2

Written Answers. - Science Subjects and Equipment.

Dick Spring

Question:

146 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Education and Science when he expects the task force on physical sciences to report; and the moneys available for additional provision of laboratories and equipment in schools during 2002. [2917/02]

I set up the physical sciences task force just over a year ago and it produced an interim report in July 2001. I expect to receive its final report within the next few weeks.

The task force is considering all the factors that impact on the uptake of the physical sciences and related subjects at both second and third level, including the provision of laboratories and equipment. Until I have had an opportunity to consider its proposals in relation to the development of laboratory resources in schools, it would be premature to give a definitive answer in respect of proposed expenditure in this area. In the interim my Department will continue to implement its ongoing school building and refurbishment programme which will, where appropriate, include the provision and-or upgrading of laboratories and equipment.
