Vol. 548 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Willie Penrose

Question:

398 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason his Department has failed to deal with stage IV/V documents, submitted on 17 May 2001 by St. Mary's CBS, Mullingar, County Westmeath, in respect of an extension; if he will authorise the school authorities to immediately proceed to stage VI and replace the flat roofs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4190/02]

The allocation for post-primary buildings in 2002 is €182.3 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in post-primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Due to the greatly increased level of investment in the post-primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

In relation to the stage IV/V documents submitted by St. Mary's CBS, Mullingar, County Westmeath, the building unit of my Department has written to the school authorities requesting additional information. Once this information has been returned by the school authorities, the building unit will be in a position to progress the project.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

399 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education and Science the situation regarding the extension at Camross national school, County Laois; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4191/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Due to the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.
Camross national school is being extended and refurbished as part of the Government's programme and is currently in architectural planning. The project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.
